Belton House, Grantham

A geophysical survey reveals evidence of an 18th century formal gardens

We were commissioned by the National Trust to undertake a geophysical survey using magnetometry on land at Belton House. The work was undertaken to assess the feasibility of construction for a ground sourced heat pump.

The survey revealed a number of features of potential archaeological interest from a range of periods; the most visually engaging of which date from the post-medieval period. Belton House was built in the late 17th century and a formal garden was laid out in the late 17th or early 18th century. A series of linear anomalies; including elements of a stellate pattern, to the north of the site align with features depicted on maps of the estate from 1717 and 1750.
