Audit of burial grounds in Greater London

Historic England’s Greater London Archaeological Advisory Service (GLAAS) commissioned Allen Archaeology Ltd to complete an audit of large historic burial ground excavations in London

This project involved making recommendations for enhancing the Greater London Historic Environment Record (GLHER), and preparing a draft research agenda for the archaeological study of historic (1066-1900) burials in London. Our Heritage Research team interrogated the GLHER and the existing published and on-line data sources to complete the audit and, working with our osteologist, collated the information for all archaeological interventions that had taken place since 1980 and which had resulted in a sample of 100 or more individuals.

The project team then organised a seminar in London where specialists from across the discipline discussed the results. Allen Archaeology drew the discussion together to produce a draft research agenda. The results of the study are available on the Historic England website.
